Family Friendly Spiced Hot Apple Cider
is easy to make when entertaining family and friends during the winter holidays or just to warm up on a snowy weekend.
Make Cocktails and Mocktails For Everyone. Yes, you can make your cocktails family friendly with no fussing or special ingredients.
Especially during the winter holidays when we entertain more than the rest of the year, it’s nice to have a simple bar set up that is well stocked with fruit juices, sparkling water or club soda, ginger ale, and of course for those who enjoy something a little different add some sparkling wine or fruit liquors.
My “favorite thing” about setting up a bar with these basics is that 99% of your guests will be happy, everyone from the youngest children and the non-drinkers to those who like a punch. Sorry about the 1%, there’s always one in the crowd.
Making a family friendly spiced hot apple cider is simple. Place everything in a 3 or 4 quart pot and simmer slowly until all the flavors are well blended.
You can adapt this recipe for both your family or a special evening with friends.
To adjust this for a special occasion you can make a mulled wine if that’s your preference. Just add red wine to the spices and let simmer in order to get the flavors to blend as I’ve done to make this easy Mulled Wine.
This is the time of year when you just might want to curl up on the couch with a good book and a warm drink, or maybe you have a few days off and just want to “chill” and relax – here is a simple family friendly spiced hot apple cider recipe to get started.
- 2 qts. apple cider
- ¼ cup sugar (or use your preferred sugar alternative)
- 1-2 oranges, peeled and squeezed (add the peel and the fresh squeezed orange juice to the pot), save some peel and slices to add to glasses
- ½ teaspoon whole cloves
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- Add all the ingredients into the pot. Heat to boiling and then reduce heat to simmer for approximately 10 minutes.
- When ready to serve strain the hot cider to remove the peels and spices. Serve Hot.
There are dozens, maybe more, of different recipes for making spiced hot apple cider. Some recipes call for adding brandy if you wish, but since this is a very flexible recipe you can add or eliminate ingredients based on your preferences and the occasion.
Eliminate the wine and brandy for family friendly versions. You can also adjust the amounts of juice and sugar accordingly to fit your preferences.
