3 Ingredient Chocolate Chip Banana Frozen Yogurt
a quick and easy Fro-Yo has no added sugar for a healthy sweet treat any day and any time of the year.
Recently I saw a video on Facebook for a banana ice cream made in 3 flavors. Choose your favorite flavor or make them all. The result was a healthier frozen treat with no added sugar and certainly very easy to make. All that’s needed are (1) bananas, (2) a fruit of your choice and/or chocolate chips, and (3) milk added to a blender. Easy? YES!!!!
I’m always ready to try a quick and easy recipe, especially if it’s ice cream. Can you guess I jumped right into this recipe as soon as I had a free day!? I couldn’t pass up making an ice cream recipe when I had everything I needed (although the definition of ice cream is NOT this recipe, that’s O.K. for me, I’m moving on to a healthier treat). NO special ingredients or equipment needed except for a blender – any blender you have is fine.
I made the original 3 ingredient banana ice cream recipe using chocolate chips which is my favorite – it turned out just as the video showed – which as you may know some videos can often be disappointing at times but this recipe was good and definitely worth a try if you like using bananas in your desserts.
However, I’m always looking to change things up to suit my palate – no surprise here. I wanted to tweak this easy recipe and make a 3 ingredient chocolate chip frozen yogurt.
There were a couple of things I wanted to change: the sweetness of the ice cream from the very ripe bananas, and the texture of the frozen ice cream still had an icy crunchiness. I needed to think about this a while.
After a couple of days I decided to just go with this basic 3 ingredient recipe but with a different set of 3 ingredients. I substituted Greek yogurt for the 2% milk which was not creamy enough. The yogurt added the creaminess and there was a little less icy crunch. To reduce some of the sweetness I used bananas that were not as ripe which helped.
Can you tell I was very excited? A good start to coming up with a healthy 3 ingredient chocolate chip frozen yogurt treat that only takes minutes to prepare and less than two hours to freeze for a delightful frozen dessert — I was totally surprised!
- 2 bananas, sliced and frozen
- ⅔ cup Greek yogurt
- chocolate chips
- 1 tsp. vanilla (optional)
- Slice and Freeze the bananas in advance.
- Add to the blender the 3 ingredients - frozen banana slices, Greek yogurt and chocolate chips and vanilla if using - then blend until everything is smooth. Depending on the blender you use, this will only take approximately a minute OR less than 30 seconds if using a high powered blender.
- Pour the mixture into a freezer container, cover and freeze for about 2 hours. The frozen yogurt should be ready to serve.
I can never pass up a healthy, quick and easy recipe to make a frozen treat. I feel compelled to share how simple it is to make healthier treats you can customize to your family’s favorite flavors. This recipe is gluten free if you use fresh/frozen fruits. Check the label to be sure the chocolate chips are gluten free if you decide to use them.
You can replace the chocolate chips with frozen berries of your choosing or any stone fruits. If using fresh fruit, clean, peel and slice the fruit first then freeze it. With the frozen bananas and fresh fruit of your choice you’ll be ready to make a frozen treat anytime you wish.
