Caramelized Onions recipe makes a delicious topping for grilled burgers or leftover steak for sandwiches. Make this recipe any time of year, winter or when grilling in summer.



  1. Cut onions in half and slice to your preference (I like mine thin, but you can cut them any way you like).
  2. In a heavy skillet heat the oil and add in the butter.
  3. Add in the onions when the butter is melted and stir to break apart the slices.
  4. Stir in the salt and cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally so they don’t burn. I have non-stick pans so they do not stick to the pan but they can burn.
  5. After about 6-7 minutes you will notice they are starting to brown (if using mushrooms you would add them now). Continue cooking until they reach the level of browning and caramelization you like. This process usually takes me a total of 15 minutes.

The cooking time will depend on the amount of onions and the type of skillet you use.
